An archive of motor sport photographs and trophy cups following the exploits of Charles Frederick “Freddie” Pope during the 1950’s and 1960’s in The Singapore Motor Club are going under the Charterhouse hammer on Thursday 17th January.
“It’s a fascinating look into motorsport just after the war.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “What is also quite mesmerising are the number of photographs which show Freddie with either a cigarette or a drink in his hand!”
Charles Frederick Pope appears to have enjoyed life to the full after the Second World War. He developed and raced his own hand built Special, car number 23, for many years. Subtle changes to the shape of the car, whether for speed or possibly down to driver error after an accident, can be easily followed in the archive of hundreds of monochrome photographs.
He also successfully raced and campaigned his Jaguar XK 120, accumulating over 60 silver plated trophies and mugs for both vehicles which are also included with the photographs at the Charterhouse auction.
Although cars features heavily in the images, it is the fun aspect which also comes across. There are several photographs of drinks parties, and a fabulous group of pictures taken at a party night at the world famous Raffles Hotel in Singapore entitled “The Raffles Grand Prix”. Here, a large group of motor enthusiasts are seen to be partying hard and racing around in Austin J40 pedal cars all dressed up in ball gowns and tuxedos.
The collection is estimated to sell for £200-400 when it goes under the Charterhouse hammer at The Long Street Salerooms, Sherborne, Dorset on Thursday 17th January in their auction of automobilia.
Charterhouse are now accepting further entries into this auction of automobilia maps, pictures, books, and antiques on 17th & 18th January. They are also taking entries for their auctions of classic cars on 10th February and classic motorcycles on 3rd February
