A rare piece of American Presidential history goes under the Charterhouse hammer in Sherborne, Dorset on Thursday 17th November, when a gold watch is entered into the sale which was presented by Grover Cleveland, the 24th American President. “The gold pocket watch was presented by President Cleveland on 11th November 1893 to Captain John Joseph Proud who was Captain of the SS Sutherland for his humane services on effecting the rescue of the crew of the American Schooner Peter H Crowel. ” Commented Richard Bromell. “It is incredibly rare to see this historically important presentation pocket watch and with live internet bidding at our auction, there will no doubt a few early risers state side when the lot goes up for sale. “The owner of the pocket watch bought it from a Christie’s auction in London nearly 20 years ago when he was working in the city.
