A collection of modern gold coins, which lived in an attic for several years, was sold in the Charterhouse two day February auction in Sherborne for nearly £50,000. “The owner, who lives in Somerset, had been clearing his father’s property in Bridgwater and came across several boxes of coins in the attic. ” Commented Richard Bromell. “He then removed them back to his Somerset house when he then put then in his attic €“ like father like son! The son, with whom we sold some stamps for previously, then took advantage of the free home visit service we offer as boxes in which the coins were held in were rather too heavy to bring into our salerooms. “The father had collected the coins directly from The Royal Mint, and they all came in fitted cases with certificates. The family have had local Somerset ties for many years. The father worked as a part time fireman and also had a sweet shop in Yeovil in the late 1960’s. In more recent years, he lived in Bridgwater where he collected the coins. In addition to the gold coins, which sold for just over £48,000, there are the silver coins which are entered into the Charterhouse two day March collector’s auction. With several thousands of pounds worth of coins still to be auctioned, the owner who originally thought the collection to be worth about £10,000, is delighted, and hopes to be able to help his daughters university education with some of the money. If you think you have at a fortune lurking in your attic, or to arrange a free home visit, please contact Richard Bromell, Director at Charterhouse, The Long Street Salerooms, Sherborne 01935 812277 or via email on info@charterhouse-auction.comCharterhouse is now accepting further entries for this March collector’s auction which includes stamps, medals, coins, clocks, model trains, cars & antiques.
