The Charterhouse auction of collectors’ items and clocks in Sherborne looks to be another huge sale with over 1,100 lots including Football World Cup signatures from 1966. “It seems quite appropriate that we should be selling these signatures as the Football World Cup is now under way. ” Commented Patrick Stainer. “The autograph album belonged to the vendor as a young girl and her father had a friend whose wife baby sat for George Cohen. I admit it is a rather long connection, but George Cohen managed to get most of the other Wold Cup Winners autographs, apparently sometimes around the breakfast table so they therefore come with excellent provenance and are fresh to the market. “Autographs and ephemera are a buoyant market at auction at present, and also included in the auction is a black and white signed photograph by Laurel and Hardy. There is also an album of early photographs which give an insight into country house life and living along with views and an insight into social history, with one of the images of the mail cart from Stamford to Collyweston, showing the driver with a wooden leg!
